Into the Glacier

Hi Everyone!

Today I went inside a glacier! First you take a bus out to the base camp, and after getting suited up with waterproof boot covers and a jacket if needed, you take an off-roading vehicle up and onto Langjökull glacier.  The view from the top is amazing!

There is a specially carved ice cave that goes into the glacier.  After strapping on crampons, you take an hour long guided tour through the glacier.

It was fascinating to see the different layers of the glacier, and some of the crevasses from the inside.

There is even a chapel where they have wedding ceremonies.

What surprised me the most about the glacier is how much water there was dripping into the ice cave. It was impossible to avoid getting wet, and now I know why they kept asking if my jacket was waterproof at base camp.  I'm glad I took scenic photos before going into the ice cave, because when we exited the cave, the clouds had rolled in, and visibility was maybe 50 feet. Our off roading vehicle drove over lots of small crevasses.

While taking a bus tour can be long, Harold likes to learn about Iceland using the Audio Guide tablet.
I love looking out the window at the amazing, and changing landscapes in Iceland.  There are times I feel like I'm on an alien planet.  These photos were all taken within the same hour.

To round off our tour we visited Barnafoss waterfall,

and the Hraunfossar waterfalls. This may be my favorite waterfall in Iceland. I think I may have taken a better photo than the postcards in the souvenir shops.
Harold would like to mention that it is incredibly windy today.  It's the first day I've actually been cold.

I'm having an early night and going to bed. As much as I would love to go on another northern lights tour tonight because tonight is supposed to be an amazing display, I just can't do two nights in a row without sleep. I have another early pick up tomorrow morning to go on another tour. I am going to book another northern lights tour for tomorrow night, because it is also supposed to be a good night, and it fits better with my schedule.
