Hello Everyone!
I slept pretty well last night, but I'm still rather tired. I'm glad my first day wasn't too crazy.
My first stop was the National Library of Finland. I love a beautiful library and this was lovely.
From there I visited the Helsinki Cathedral. While the inside might be sparse compared to the ones I saw in Italy, I like the elegant simplicity. The pipe organ is rather elaborate though, and so are the chandeliers.
From there I wandered through the Senate square in front of the cathedral
to get to the Helsinki city museum. Helsinki was founded by the Swedes in 1550, then taken over by the Russians in the 1700's. Finland only became an independent country in 1917, which makes it all the more interesting to me that the 1952 winter Olympics were hosted in Helsinki. Finland became part of the European Union in 1995.
Then I wandered around the Market Square near the harbour,
and the Esplanadi Park. I thought this statue was amusing, don't mess with this lady's books!
Unfortunately the interactive art museum Harold was really looking forward to visiting is closed for the next month. That info was buried in their website which is why I didn't know. Harold suggested we ride the observation wheel down by the harbour instead.
When planning this trip I tried to book a viking feast, but none were available in any of the cities I was visiting. I'm making up for it by visiting viking themed restaurants instead, so for dinner tonight I went to Viking Restaurant Harald. Harold was very excited to go to a restaurant with his name.
Harold said I had to wear the viking helmet too.
I'm looking forward to getting to sleep in a little tomorrow, I still need to catch up on my sleep. Oh, and before I forget, some of you have asked me if you can comment on the blog, and the answer is yes. I have enable the comments feature, so feel free to leave comments if you want.

Bummer about the museum! Glad you were able to improvise. Definitely a different vibe than Italy or England right off the bat.
ReplyDeleteI love that cathedral! So beautiful! Sorry about the museum, but sounds like an awesome day!

ReplyDeleteI would not have thought to visit libraries on a trip...what a wonderful idea! I love books...and libraries are so different...visit more! :) What was the meal you had? At first I thought that you might still be hungry after that...but I guess I am used to seeing (and eating) huge American portions!
