Hi Everyone,
Some days traveling is more difficult than others, so today's post is going to focus more on Harold. I had planned to get up early to walk through the ruins when it wouldn't be so hot. Unfortunately, I woke up with a terrible sinus headache and had to sleep in. Headaches make me move slower, so I left the hostel about 2 hours later that I wanted. To cheer me up, Harold suggested that we have breakfast at the crepe restaurant near the hostel, since we were leaving late enough for them to be open.
From there we went to the ruins of Hadrian's Library
and the Ancient Agora, a marketplace and meeting place for the ancient Greeks. I followed the Rick Steves app tour for that today, and it was great. I especially liked the temple of Hephaestus. It's like a miniature intact Parthenon.
Inside the Ancient Agora, is the reconstructed Stoa of Attalos, which houses the Ancent Agora museum, where artifacts found in the Agora are kept. Harold really liked this statue of Winged Victory from 400 BC.
I tried to spend the hottest part of the day indoors, at the Museum for Greek Folk musical instruments. I now know that the Greeks do in fact play their own version of bagpipes, and the instrument this street musician is playing is called a Santouri. I saw this street musician yesterday near the Acropolis.
After that I went to the Roman Agora, the new marketplace after the Ancent Agora was destroyed.
Then I trekked out to see Hadrian's Arch,
and back to the Acropolis hill to see the Odeon of Herodes Atticus,
and the Theater of Dionysus.
The Odeon has been renovated and musical performances are still held here. The current show is the opera Madam Butterfly. The Theater of Dionysus is not used. I loved the carved stone seats along the front row.
After walking around in the heat for most of the day, I was done. I have a really early flight in the morning, so Harold suggested we have an early dinner at a restaurant near the hostel that has an amazing view of the Acropolis.
I'll be packing up tonight, but I'll leave you all with another video from Athens.
