Hi Everyone!
I have arrived safely in Italy along with my suitcase, which is always such a relief. For this trip I will be including photos and stories involving a special travel companion. His name is Harold; he's a purple hippopotamus Beanie Baby from the 90's. He traveled with me when I was in high school, and I think its fitting that he continues to travel with me. My stories and adventures on this blog are real, and I think it's fun to include Harold as a fictional character in my story, with thoughts, emotions, and dialogue. I also think using him in photos will force me to take some creative shots that I might not ordinarily think about. So, with that said, Harold really liked watching the planes take off at the airport this morning.
Harold also survived the 11 hour plane trip unscathed, which cannot be said for myself. I really do hate jet lag, so this will be a short post. After landing in Rome, we took a train to Florence.
Florence has very narrow sidewalks made of uneven flagstones, so it's a miracle I managed to drag my suitcase to the hostel. I don't remember the hostel being so far away from the train station, but that might be a matter of perspective.
I like to plan something simple for the first day of my trips, so Harold and I went to the Medici Palace. They have a beautiful garden area, and lots of amazing art and sculpture. I especially loved the mosaic tile floors of the palace, and the mosaic work done using small stones in the garden area. I will be trying to make sure that all photos of artwork are safe for work, since some of you may be viewing this blog at your workplace. Here are some photos from the Medici Palace. The artwork is amazing! More fun to come tomorrow!
